1 Cor 12 uses the metaphor of the human body to picture the body of Christ. Most of the time this passage is preached, the emphasis is on using spiritual gifts to build up the body or the church. Although that emphasis is scriptural, is it not also true that spiritual gifts are to benefit those outside of the church? 1 Peter 4:10 says we should use whatever gift we have received to serve others. Certainly we want to serve those both inside and outside of the church.
